Sean McColl's training video


Always interesting to see what other people are doing. Canadian climber Sean McColl sharing his regimen for endurance circuits and core. The core work is still fairly climbing specific on the whole which is good. Plus the press-ups seem to be good for preventing ‘Font elbow’.

Be interested to hear your perspective on the thread running over on ClimbingNarc.com about this exact video - Dan Hague of 'Self Coached Climber' set off a bit of a storm......

Neal - I read some of the comments. The criticism was maybe a little sharp. I took the video to be just one part of hopefully a much bigger picture of the training that should be done. For me that goes without saying but I guess Dan was right to point out that it isn't made explicit in the video whether Sean spends a lot of his time working core, or whether he is working on more specific skills more of the time.

I guess it highlights an important message for self-coaches trying to digest bits and pieces of advice from the web and literature; keep the bigger picture in mind and don't get too focused on one aspect of training. You could write a whole book on core training for climbers but it doesn't stop it from being subordinate to the higher priority training of technique, finger strength, tactics etc..

hi Dave, great reply - you should probably post it on the forum also most sensible thing I've seen in relation to topic :)
had the same opinion as you, out was only one small component of a larger plan.but also a good reminder that not everyone will realize this and take it in isolation.

Actually, it was Douglas Hunter that set off the storm. Dan Hague and Douglas Hunter co-wrote "The Self Coached Climber".

On a side note, I recently talked to Dan Hague at a competition here. I mentioned the posts to him. He chuckled and said usually it is him that sets off the fire storm instead of Douglas.
